Question About Lifesteal

Does lifesteal work off of overall DPS or does it only work with the physical portion of your damage?

I'm fairly sure that it only works with the physical portion but I figured I might as well ask just to be sure.

It only works with physical direct hit damage. (Weapon or arrow). There is also penalty for difficulty level.
