My laptop is now furious at me and won't let me sleep in bed for sometime, but I still failed to "lose" me character in this way. After booting the computer and starting the game my test character was still there and it's progress remained more or less intact.
Losing your character was most likely due to the fact that, on some operating systems - game is not allowed to make saves by itself. See THIS and THIS topics for info how to solve your problem.
All I know is unlike what the installation instructions state, I unzipped the belzebub archive straight to my desktop, didn't throw any original diablo 1 files at it, put my diablo 1 cd in and went nuts.
I haven't had any of these weird problems I keep seeing on the forums about crashes, saves, etc. Maybe its blasphemy to not follow the "Installation Instructions," but I learned long ago in the mystic lands of Vistaopia to never put anything in the program files directory... uhh... EVER if I have a choice.
Heck I didn't even notice there was that oalinst.exe to run to install OpenAL at first. I was chuggin along the demo, and after a couple days notice it and read the readme.txt.... Whoops!
