Help with Diablo fight

Post by Meribah »

Hello,

A bit of information: last time I've played diablo 1 was in 1998, now found out this mode it is amazing, was playing it non stop after work for 3 days. Problem is - I apparently really, really suck at this game. I can't win the final fight on normal difficulty.

I play necromancer, he is level 27. My minions die in one nova attack yet I do not do enough damage to Diablo since I run out of mana potions and hp potions even in full inventory. Best I did was 50% of hp, but then the health just regenerated full and I had no resources left.

My main skill is chain lightning (due to unique stave I have), but tried holy bolt (apparently does 0 damage), fireball and frost equivalent for fireball. Am I underleveled is he severely vulnerable to some niche spell is there something I am missing?

Thanks for any help and tips, would really like to finish the game at least on normal.

Welcome to the game!
First off, be aware that there's a time limit for facing Diablo. Once you set foot in his domain, you have one hour or he goes into super-saiyan mode and becomes basically unbeatable. You can look at your Map of the Stars to see if you have time left. Second, you can always drop strategic piles of potions around the level: go to town, stock up, go down, drop 'em where you want 'em, repeat as needed; then you can knock down the crucified skeletons and unleash Dibs.
That's just generalized advice though. Personally, on normal difficulty I find it's useful to combine Guardian + Teleport (aka "pussy strats") and just wear him down while watching from a safe distance, but I'm no expert on Necromancers so hopefully someone else will jump in.

Thanks for your help - will try guardian + teleport, but it does sound cheap though : I

It worked, took me 2 inventories of potions, but did it : )

@Meribar do you play from a distance and how many Skellies can you call forward to do your bidding?

I'm in a similar way. I rolled a lvl 27 warrior, so I must have leveled appropriately as well. Hell has kicked my butt. The witches/succubi on previous levels were so hard to kill. I ended up carrying an inventory full of mana pots and using level 2 chain lighting to kill many of them since Stone Curse was nerfed so much and my level 1 golem decoy dies almost instantly.

In Terror's Domain I just can't take it. My HP is 400 and my resist is max all, and I deal about 211 DPS with 130 AC.

What's a warrior to do?

@CmdrPhil

Where are you getting stuck? Your DPS is, well, sickly, so I'm guessing you're just getting bum-rushed at the stairwell and can't deal with the knights? See Warriors are the most adaptive class on Normal so there's a lot of different ways you could have taken them, so knowing which mini-boss is holding you back will help us figure out the best way to counteract the problem.

As for the succubi, I've become a big convert of getting my Warrior a level or 2 of Teleport, popping in right next to them, and using Cleave to take out the whole group quickly. The downside is you absolutely have to prioritize Mana Leech on your gear to feed those abilities but it's more effective than the poor man's wizard routine, and it's just fun. I call it the Hello Nurse.

Also anything you can do to get that Golem up? Say ~at least~ level 3? You don't exceptionally need Lumpy against the gangs and mini-bosses but he's an absolute must against Dibs. See he's got this one lightning jizz attack that you really, really want Lumpy to take for you and making sure he's taking his beats enough to get killed by that instead of you is a game-changer.

For now I have only beaten Diablo on Normal, so I cannot speak for the higher difficulties.

As a Warrior, you should just be able to smash him with Valiant Strike and a very fast melee weapon (e.g. Azurewrath). If you have leveled your hero correctly (such as putting all points into Strength, etc.) and have decent equipment, it should not take more than 30 seconds to kill him. I would also suggest to fight him in the open because if you put yourself next to a wall, he will destroy your equipment very quickly. The exact same principle applies to other melee fighters too, just the skills differ (e.g. Frenzy + Cleave for a Barbarian, and Fanaticism for an Assassin).

As a Necromancer, I found Skeletons and Guardian to be a very safe combination. Keep him at a distance and keep switching between summoning 1 Skeleton and casting 1 Guardian. Make sure to summon the Skeletons right next to him (so he keeps standing still and getting hit by the Guardians). This will work as long as you have put all your points in Vitality so that the Skeletons will actually have enough hit points not to die instantly. They themselves will do some damage too. You may end up needing a lot of potions so make sure to prepare yourself in advance (e.g. put a lot of potions on the ground in a safe place). Also, make sure that you can cast at least 2 Guardians without refilling mana. Another method is to simply fight him in melee with a very fast weapon (e.g. Azurewrath) with Skeletons used as meat shields, but I have found this one more risky than the Skeleton/Guardian combo. I did try Lightning and Chain Lightning too, but for me Guardian works way better than those.

Some screenshots:

Necromancer:

These were taken right after killing Diablo and just before starting the Nightmare difficulty. A few of the items did actually drop from Diablo himself, so the original equipment was slightly different, but I do not have any screenshots of those any more. When it comes to the Necromancer, I did use a different helm with +mana for the Diablo fight so that I was able to cast Guardian two times. I also cleared each location only once, did not farm for items at all, and also did not exchange the items between my heroes (on purpose as not to make the game too easy). I did waste a lot of money on gambling with Gheed though. I also checked both Griswold, Gheed and Wirt for items every time when visiting Tristram and managed to buy a few good items this way too.

Thanks, Wendigo and tomasz86!

I was finally able to beat him yesterday. It was quite a fight, and I was impressed with the slight change in the ending that the mod invoked.

It looks like my problem was putting too much into vitality, dex, and magic, instead of pumping almost all into strength. It's too late for this character though as I know no way to reroll stats in the mod like in D2.

What I did to cope with my warrior was to focus on one quadrant of Terror's domain at a time (trying to avoid the main hallway as much as possible at first) and leaving plenty of potions on the ground for me to pick up when I ran out so I didn't need to go back to town and let the superuniques heal while gone.

I probably had about 10 minutes left in the Map of Stars once Diablo was down.

It was quite rewarding.

Oh fantastic, congratulations!
Don't give up on the character though. Sure you messed up a bit on their stat distribution, but the deeper you go in the later levels the less that matters. It's hard to quibble about 5 points here or there when your gear is collectively adding hundreds to your stats.
Plus a Warrior is designed to be more balanced than most character classes. In fact it's recommended that you save the 'all STR all the time' plan for a Barbarian; Warriors want some dex, mag, and vit to give them better crits, spells, and survivability so they have options a Barb simply can't do.
