Dreaded Gold Drop Bug

Post by Jofuss »

I swear I hit the screenshot key but apparently I didn't :(

I think it was the record for dropped gold! I literally had to pick up gold from the ground of HALF of the infested cellar level when I died because of the gold drop bug...(it went out of the boss room, around the corner and down the hall in two directions...) there were a couple big piles around where I died but it spread out for literally dozens of tiles in piles of 1 gold...

I of course wasn't thinking and let loose on that stupid wurm and ended up with 10 zillion poison puddles at my feet and thus the game decided I should drop all the gold in my inventory as far as the eye can see.

Can we at least get an option to toggle this off until its fix? Personally I don't find the gold drop to make death any more discouraging...unless something like this happens which makes me irate.

I think I encountered the same bug or a very similar one yesterday while fighting a boss in the catacombs: I saw (most likely) 4 gold stacks drop at the same time, twice in a row while I was still fighting and had drank a health potion.
So I decided to stop fighting as that probably meant I should be dead already and let the monster kill me "for good": there were only a few gold stacks when I came back.
Do you also stop fighting when you see that happening ?

Is there a way to reproduce everytime? I know all game guts check if you are not dead for healing effects. Is it related to hit recovery maybe?

I meant to post this under the bugs and suggestions thread... I obviously wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. Can it be moved into it please? :)

Edit: I know you were asking if Constance's bug could be recreated but I just did the infested cellar again to try and recreate mine to take a screenshot but low and behold he wasn't poison enchanted this time and thus i didn't die a horrible gold drowned death. I was able however to get a much smaller version of the gold drop bug.

Normal(ish)

Just a FYI: Alt Print Screen doesn't work... that's why I didn't get my picture before. I had to hit CTRL to make the stupid item tags come up for the print screen :)

I don't know, I only had it happen to me once so far.
Not even sure if I had any item with hit recovery equiped at that time...

Jofuss, does it also happen without mana shield?

I'll try and figured that out. It might be a few days to get high enough HP items to survive long enough to accumulate puddles without manashield.

Yes it does happen to me a lot without manashield (warrior).
I've been experimenting with it and I think it has to do with what actually kills you.

Have you considered how puddles deal damage compared to normal monster attacks? I've been trying to duplicate it but I can't create a situation where I can test for sure but I think it happens if you die to the poison puddle damage as opposed to a normal monster attack. If I am killed by a normal attack, even while standing in poison puddles then the gold drop is normal but it appears if I die between attacks, from the pool damage, then the gold drop bug happens.

I have been testing this on dungeon 6 against a group of unique spitter monsters and the bug happens about half the time, its just hard to create a situation where i can walk into poison puddles with low HP without the actual poison ball projectiles hitting me and scoring the killing hit.

It may also be the fact that multiple sources can damage the player at exactly the same time...so if a person is hit by a killing blow and also takes 3 or 4 other sources of damage at the exact same time then they are "killed" for each instance of damage

THIS seems to be the likely cause to me as far as what I've seen.

It seems that if you receive multiple different sources of damage that would drop you below 0 health, you drop a few piles of gold for each.

So thus if you have a ridiculous amount of acid puddles at your feet when you die, you drop a very large amount of gold piles. (Or charged bolts or stacked firewalls...etc)

I'd also like to add that spells like Firewall, Lightning Wall, Chain Lightning and acid pools damage you much much faster than any normal monster would. 2 acid pools and 1 lightning could be equivalent to about 10 monsters with normal attack speed hitting you. Assuming this is all true, normal monsters could also trigger the bug, however are less likely since you'd need to be completely surrounded with monsters.

If you'd like to test my theory, the Cathedral would be a good place to test it. Lots of normal hitting monsters. No spells. Hope my point makes sense.

All you'd havs to do is drop a bunch firewalls (lightning wall) and walk into them. I've done that anumber of times and haven't bug dropped that much gold yet. Thus I don't think its related to actual damage over time spells and makes me think acid puddles are likely programmed to do damage differently.
