One thing with magic has been bugging me...

Post by Constance »

Hi there .o/

So, as I was saying in the thread's title, one thing with magic has been bugging me, even in the unmodded D1: it is that some spells, such as Healing for example, require increasingly more mana to cast them as you level up.

To me that just seems to be plain wrong.
I mean, I guess it would be OK that the Healing spell, at the same spell level, would require more mana if you have more significantly more hit points (that means not the very few ones you gain from leveling up ^^') or perhaps more vitality, but why should leveling up actually make a character less proficient at using magic? If it really has to change anything about it, I feel the character leveling up should on the contrary make him become more proficient.

I remember there was a similar issue in Diablo 2 (perhaps only in Lord of Destruction), where a character needed more and more dexterity to maintain his chance to block with a shield as he gained levels.

If the devs share that point of view, and when you have time to work on balancing the game, would you please take into consideration reworking the mana cost of spells (and anything related to character level) so it becomes more... rational?

I never liked the concept of spells having increasing mana costs with levels either. As a rogue or warrior who didnt have a high magic stat, this made it very difficult to use spells at all. A single healing spell would use up ALL of my mana, not to mention i couldnt even use some spells once! It was more of a bug than a balance issue.

I propose spells cost more mana with higher levels of the spell. Leveling your firebolt spell will increase damage and effectiness while also increasing manacost. Warriors wont beable to level their spells if they dont have the magic to use the books, and therefore wont push the manacost of spells past their mana pool.

As for skills which only have a mana stat, such as town port or warp, these skills will just lower mana cost with spell level. Character level will have little or no effect here.

I can elaborate if anyone is confused.
