Am I playing my new Necro correctly?
I had a lot of trouble when I played this a year ago, and I simply could not take Diablo down no matter how hard I tried. He was nigh on immune to any spell I possessed, he slaughtered my Skeletons instantly (I was Clvl30 too) and carved into me pretty quickly as well. I just had no way of causing any real damage to him. Izual gave me similar problems as well, and the only way I was able to overcome him was with a full inventory of potions. That got me nowhere with Diablo.
It has been a year since I've played and I'm starting my Necro over. I want to get it right this time and actually be able to progress into the higher difficulties at the end of my first journey, so I'd appreciate any and all Necro tips from those more experienced than me, and how to set myself up for success later.
My general starting pattern is to stick to Dlvl1 until I hit Clvl8, get some basic gear and a decent catalog of starting spells, and only once I can summon Skeletons do I start to advance deeper. I'll typically farm Leo's chamber for a fair bit until I've amassed some gold and decent equipment for surviving the lower floors, then once I get Arkaines Valor things go fairly smooth until the Caves. winged skeletons start showing up is when things start getting rough for me.
As far as stats and gear goes, I pretty much pump Vit and ignore everything else, stash Magic boosters for book reading, and aim for anything with -DFE, Resistances (preferably Resist All), and +All Stats. Eventually I'll want "X damage taken to Mana" as well, once I get Blood Pact.
I prefer having a weapon/shield as opposed to a staff as well.

On normal level, Ugily the Necro defeated Diablo in melee. I used Azurath Sword and had rings with life leach and Shield Wall in other hand. Kept Diablo off of me by summoning skeletons as quickly as possible and continuing to attack.
By nightmare, everything shifted to Bone Spirit to wear him down and skeletons as I had a complete set of Arcanna's Tricks and I kept spamming guardian spell to finish Diablo off while keeping skeletons to distract. Had a second Arcanna staff in second weapon position.
Hell level. Had mix of crafted equipment and items with life regen. Killed Diablo quickly with Bone Spirit and Skeletons.
Torment. Now have full set of Rathma. Bone Spirit and Skeletons and Renanimated Death Knights. Lure Diablo out of his chamber to piles of bodies to reanimate and explode.

Not sure if you want this advice if you are set on playing your necro first...
My personal recommendation would be to roll a rogue or a mage to blast through some of the content, getting to hell difficulty fairly easy and getting some gear for your necro. Gear plays a big part of it. On my first play through as a rogue I struggled like crazy on normal/nightmare modes, even resorting to trying to melee some bosses with sword and shield because I just could not take them down. Now I am playing my second rogue, with good gear, I have not put a single point into agility and I have cleared normal and nightmare difficulties with $player 10 setting, currently clearing hell difficulty at $player 10 setting as well, I just turn down the setting for some harder bosses and diablo himself.
Also, if skeletons are anything like Golem they get their biggest boost on torment difficulty and at that point you mostly watch them kill stuff.

Clvl20, going okay so far, got some decent all-stat gear including a +8 ring and Regal Tabard, and some pretty beefy spells. Able to get my Magic up to 135 with equipment/elixirs, base stats are 18/33/18/128 at the moment.
If I can get a decent set of Stars equipment across the board and get my all res up, hopefully I'll be able to manage against Diablo. I wish my Golem were stronger, apparently it scales with Magic so it might never be worthwhile to use alongside my Skeletons.
My Skeletons are starting to get torn up though; as soon as I hit Caves the Winged Demons just shredded them.

Any advice for surviving the final floor? I am getting my ass beat in Terror's Domain. Out of eight attempts I've been put into inescapable stunlock seven times, twice by Death knights and five times by the boss in Cage 2. The ONE time I made it to the last cage to engage Diablo himself, he INSTANTLY toasted my entire army with Apoc and...let's just say I never knew my butt could be so pliant.
I am Clvl29 so I'm definitely not underleveled for this, and I feel like my gear is okay too, so what gives? Why is this floor so unbelieveably BRUTAL, even on lowly Normal mode? How can I give myself a way to escape stunlock if I get caught in it? How can I make this more manageable?

Keep at it, first character and first run through is always tough.
Knowing the bosses on that floor helps allot. You gotta remember their abilities and what it is that makes them dangerous, then figure out a comfortable way to deal with them. As for the mobs, you shouldnt be getting stunlocked (from knights charging you), your skellies should be taking those blows.
As for diablo himself, he auto kills everything except you and himself when you first engage him (so you dont actually have to clear the mobs in his room if you dont want, just teleport in after clearing the other 3 rooms and he kills everything in his room when he wakes). So teleport into the room to say hi, teleport back out once you wake him and start summoning your army in the hallway.

Just to add to NegPulse's comment, Teleport is the most important spell a Necro can spam since it not only gets them out of harm's way but conveniently re-bundles their minions into a nice shield wall formation (it's also quite good at getting you out of a stun-lock). I also might suggest that there is a fair amoutn of muscle memory involved in the whole of Terror's Domain, so keep at it and believe in the heart of the ca.. er, your own abilities. You can also try looking up some videos on YouTube, there are a fair number from community members here and they might show you some of the finer details we couldn't get into here.
If you're still having a hard time with stun-locks even after this advice, you can always equip more gear with Faster Hit recovery, it's that affix's sole purpose.
If you feel the need to rant about Douchebag the Teleporting Knight, King of All Stunlockia, feel free. You'll find many a sympathetic ear.

Well, the only item I have that has any real Hit Recovery is Arkaine's Valor. It's still a decent armor compared to my current rare I guess, which has +7 all stats.
I have yet to find any rares that have both +all res and +all stats. At this point I'd settle for +all res with hit recovery or -DFE. As long as I have enough to use Azurewrath, which I don't see me replacing anytime soon, my stats are high enough.

So I made it to Diablo again, I'm very slowly chipping him down by spamming skeletons behind him, slowing wearing him down, then...out pops a red portal and I start getting overwhelmed by minions. Then he gets Lightning Inferno and Fire Snake and I can no longer stay on top of him.
I don't get this fight at all. My spells do almost no damage (7 CL, 6 Fireball, 2 Frozen Orb), he wastes my Skeletons instantly, he's constantly stunning me with Fire Nova and Apoc, and THEN he can start summoning balrogs and mages too? And if I go back to town to repair and repot, he heals fully...
What the hell am I doing wrong here? There has to be some gimmick I'm missing, because his stats can't be this ridiculous on purpose...

Well, first off, sorry if this sounds pedantic but gotta cover the bases, you do know you only have an hour from the moment you first step foot in Terror's Domain to kill him otherwise he goes super-saiyan? When you examine the Map of the Stars the twin suns get closer to the apex of the circle and once it turns red you just wanna exit the game and start TD from scratch (the timer resets when you exit and come back). Talking to Cain will also give you a very depressing speech to let you know.
Your spell list is sub-optimal. Don't throw targeted spells like Fireball and Frorb, you want to be avoiding hits instead of aiming. Guardian should still do decent damage to him at Normal difficulty, and will keep hitting him even when you teleport/run away to get away from his lightning jizz attack. How high is your Golem spell? Your skeletons will die quickly (although even if they only take one hit that's one hit you're not), but Lumpy should take a beating quite well. Your CL spell is going to be a main source of damage and it's a bit low at level 7 for a spellcaster class. You should be able to grind additional books easily enough by doing the Sanctum part of the Lost Treasure quest.
And try to ignore his summons as best you can. Once he hits a certain HP threshold he kills them all again like he did when you started the fight.
There's also a trick to avoid having to go back to town, once you've killed the three other bosses but before you activate the last crucified skeleton, you can go back to town, fill up on potions, go down, drop them on the ground in a safe location, repeat until there's about 2 backpacks full of potions on the ground you can use to avoid having to use TP. It gets a bit hectic trying to restock with him coming at ya but as you say, it's better than refilling his health.

I have a lot of various books banked at the moment, but they all require 180+ Magic, which I'm unable to get. I've spent every single level up on Vitality to maximize my skeletons and prepare for Blood Ritual. I can get maybe 150ish with Elixir and Eerie, but no more.
I do have Meteor Cluster and Blizzard at Lv1, but my Guardian is also Lv5. I guess I can give that a try.
And yes, I know about the timer. I reached him before the suns even circled halfway, roughly 20 minutes into the floor.
These are all of my spells:

Frost Shard: 12
Firebolt: 14
Charged Bolt: 11
Healing: 14
Heal Other: 12
Holy Bolt: 12
Inferno: 11

Wendigo mentioned summoning gaurdians, I would try that tactic. Hell I killed Diablo on normal and nightmare using mostly guardian on my rogue.
Get yourself a safe distance from the fight and then spam guardian while re-summoning skellies on the other side of Diablo so he never faces you. You will be chugging potions like its going outta style but I can see that doing decent damage. And if your skellies cant keep up or you get overwhelmed or a portal appears right behind you teleport to the hallway or the next room and continue on.

Seriously though, just spam him with lightning walls. They damage instantly, they stack up, and he will have to walk through them to get to you. You may even keep summoning skeletons to make him stay in the walls longer.
