Game freezes when I try to talk to Cain

If at any point in the game I click on him, the game freezes

Not sure if any of this is relevant, but running Windows 10. Installed D1 from the cd that came w/ the D2 battlechest.

Any thoughts?

It could be corrupted since cds can fail. I'd try getting the diabdat.mpq from another source and again the files downloaded from here on site, maybe it will work.
