double rewards?

I didnt talk to pipin in level 1, I entered the water passage in level 2, cleared the monsters, I got the ring from pepin, but never talked to him about the water supply, and he didnt say anything about it after the water was clear, I then started a new game and got the ring again, still nothing from pepin. is this as intended?
