Is it possible to get more resistances than 75%? Why is there a limitation? Is it from Diablo 1 and Diablo 1 Hellfire?

yes there are unique and crafted items that provide increase to maximum resistances
you probably can even get 100 of one element if you go really ham on it, not sure if it's useful though
