Diablo 1 HD Hellfire Mod | Awake

Tried to find this info on the site and other forum threads but no luck, I am curious what exactly "Magic Hit Damage" is on Aguinara's Hatchet or the "Fire Hit Damage" on Batskin's Cape. Is this just damage added to melee attacks, or is it added to spells? I ask because items that add damage to attacks is worded "Adds Fire Damage"

The damage is only for physical attacks; note that this counts damage from bows as well. I assume it was just an oversight in the description.
