Unable to connect to friend - need a little help :)

Hey Guys,
A friend and I just downloaded the mod which runs fine but we are unable to connect to each other. I have tried connecting to him and visa versa but it fails each time using the IP's given on screen.
We have allowed the game through both of our firewalls.
For myself, do I need to open any ports? For my hub when I open ports I need to know the following info:
Protocol (TCP or UDP)
Port range
Translate to
Trigger protocol
Trigger port
If someone could help up it would be awesome
