Help in creating a Diablo II mod : Where to start?

Hello guys, i'm opening this thread to ask modders for a piece of advice. I was working on a D2 mod, but all the stuffs made there created lots of errors and therefore I prefer to restart from scratch. I would like to ask modders how they managed to create their own mods (even D1 mods, i just need some advices, not technical answers). I would also receive a hint on what could be the first thing to be modded, if items, characters, monsters or skills (or maybe maps?).

I think that you shoud start from building time machine and get back to 2003 :d

I wouldn't think that's needed :P : playing around i discovered myself able to work on D2's gfx and skills. Here are some pieces of what I managed to create. It's all softcoded. Everyone can do this, and surely do much better of what's the current status of my mod (let's say 1% complete :P). Also, consider this is my very first "serious" approach to D2 modding.

already done :P i got midis of Haste and unholy armor, too :P
which have the same effects of warcraft 2 :)

Little many resurrection Icons but looks Interesting. Summoning goat Men is an nice Idea.
