Could it be because the GoG version is 1.09 V2, and not 1.09?

Well, after hours of playing. My character never saved.
I loaded the game at level 1, instead of 18 and a trunk full of loot.

I will backup my character saves once in a while, thank you. That is a pretty funny way to keep people out of your stuff, and an even better way to disappoint those nosey folks. lol Hot keying skills and spells seems just the same as it was in the original release of Diablo.
