Easiest way is just the copy the player_save folder and replace them if it gets corrupted?

My game randomly crashed, *become a problem I've gotten used to* but this time my character was completely gone when I reopened the game!! How the hell is that possible, and is there any way I can just back up all my characters in case it happens again?

I'm trying to install on my windows 7 PC and I guess I messed something up. I unzipped the release 1045 folder and I copied everything from it and put it in my C:/diablo folder.
