Diablo 1 HD MOD - installation on Mac

Post by czesiek32 »

This is my first post, and first I'd like to thank you for creating this amazing HD MOD. It makes playing original Diablo a fantastic experience, it's great to be back to Tristram 20 years after original game was released! Loads of enhancements from D2, high resolution, auto save and many more makes this a must have extension for every Diablo fan.

As I managed to install Diablo with HD MOD on a Mac computer I will share my experience in this post. I believe more Mac users want to play, but there is no instruction I could find anywhere.

Requirements:
- macOS (tested on 10.11.6 but should work on other versions too)
- Crossover https://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover-mac/
This software allows to run windows software on Mac, it's not free but IMO worth paying for. There is a trial period, so you can test it for free for 14 days. You can also try with free WINE instead, but I have not tested that.
- Original Diablo ISO file - you can download it from the Internet Archive for free:
https://archive.org/details/Diablo_1996_Blizzard
- HD MOD - http://diablo1.ovh.org/hd/?download
I tested with Diablo 1 HD MOD v1.045

Steps:
- Download Original Diablo ISO file and double click on it to mount in a system - it will be visible as a new drive
no virtual drive, or other extra software required here, Mac handles ISO files natively
- Go to mounted drive and run SETUP.EXE - Cross over will open
- Diablo window will appear, chose 'Install & Play Diablo' with all defaults (win xp, paths etc.)
- Diablo will run but display white screen - exit with 'esc'.
- Using Crossover bottles manager open directory where diablo is installed, next copy there file DIABDAT.MPQ (from mounted original game)
Destination folder should be something like: /Users/robert/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/Diablo/drive_c
- Unzip 'Release1045.zip' and copy the entire content to folder where Diablo is installed
- Unmount drive (in finder)
- Run game with 'Belzebub.exe'
- To easily open diablo with crossover without browsing files rename 'Belzebub.exe' to 'diablo.exe'

To make game sound available open 'Wine configuration' (for this crossover bottle - in crossover interface), then:
- go to libraries tab
- find 'openal32' on the list (add it first if it's not there)
- change to 'native'
- apply
- sound will work now

Any questions let me know, I'm happy to help :)

You should be able to skip several of those steps since the HD "mod" isn't actually a mod and, as such, does not require a working install of the original game.
All it needs from the original game is the CD's diabdat.mpq file.
